Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur feasts feature the best of Newish-Jewish Cuisine
With the summer coming to an end and the hustle and bustle of getting the kids back to school, it’s no wonder that the High Holy Day creeps up faster than anyone’s realized. And while many can only hope to create meals as delicious as their elders, some people just can’t seem to master that brisket or honey cake-- or even have the time to try!

Which is why, London Grill is once again making itself the home-away-from-home for members of Philadelphia's Jewish community. Leave it to Chef Michael McNally to make dinner as good as your Bubbe's. For over ten years now, McNally has been helping to welcome the New Year, breaking the Yom Kippur fast with his Newish-Jewish cuisine – dishes steeped in tradition, while remaining innovatively enticing for Jewish and non-Jewish guests.

"For me, this is really a harvest holiday," said Chef McNally. "I'll be scouting the local farmers’ markets for the season's best ingredients to make this a truly wonderful occasion." That means traditional ingredients like Swiss chard and leeks to keep enemies away; round carrots for a rounded life; chickpeas, lentils, and black-eyed peas for abundance; and pomegranate seeds for good deeds and lots of babies.

Among the goodies McNally is planning to prepare range from a traditional feather-light matzoh ball soup to an exotic chickpea and lentil tagine.There's even a glamorous chicken liver substitute: a pâté inspired by the great chefs of Southwestern France! For the main course, McNally recommends his juicy roast chicken, horseradish-crusted salmon, sweet and sour brisket, and braised short ribs, served on spaghetti, kugel style.

Of course, you have to have something sweet to ensure a happy new year. So the chef has dreamed up Middle Eastern style tzimmes with sweet potatoes, tart apples, and house-made honey marshmallows, torched like meringue. And because it just wouldn't be the same without the rugalach, London will be serving their delightful version of the traditional little sticky buns.
